14 CFR Part 77

Five imaginary surfaces, evaluated on every site

Part 77 defines the airspace around an airport as a set of imaginary surfaces. A structure that exceeds one of them triggers an FAA notification requirement. Every CurvAero analysis computes all five from the airport's own published geometry and reports the penetration depth against each.

Primary
Centred on the runway centreline and extending beyond each end; its width follows the runway’s approach category.
Approach
Rises outward from each end of the primary surface along the extended centreline, at a slope set by the approach type.
Transitional
Slopes upward and outward at 7:1 from the sides of the primary and approach surfaces to the horizontal surface.
Horizontal
A plane 150 ft above the established airport elevation, bounded by arcs swung from the ends of each runway.
Conical
Extends outward and upward from the edge of the horizontal surface at 20:1 for a horizontal distance of 4,000 ft.
